A 6-year-old girl is being called a 9-1-1 hero for staying calm and getting her mother medical help, Polk County Public Schools District said in a news release.
Polk County Fire Rescue honored Esperanza Lopez at Spook Hill Elementary on Wednesday for her bravery.
Esperanza Lopez’s mother, Angela Lopez, tried to assemble a cabinet at their Frostproof home on Oct. 21 when she fell off a ladder onto her back and couldn’t get up, district officials said.
Esperanza Lopez ran to get help, but couldn’t find anyone.
She got her mom’s cell phone and said, “Mommy, it’s ok. Don’t cry. I’m just going to call 9-1-1.”
Angela Lopez said she started crying tears of joy when she heard the ambulance arrive.
“She is most definitely my hero,” Angela Lopez said.
Firefighters and dispatchers visited Esperanza at school, and arrived in a fire truck and ambulance.
She was presented an award and spoke to her classmates about what to do if they also need to call for help.
